Abstract
A method to achieve high data rate transmission in a cognitive radio (CR) system with adaptive use of spectrum is proposed. A periodic power spectral density measurement is taken over the span of the transmission band to identify spectral areas with low jammer and/or interference power. A probabilistic algorithm is then used to define spectral regions, adaptively and pseudorandomly, in which a frequency-hopped spread-spectrum (FHSS) system can operate. Simulation results have shown that schemes incorporating spectrum measurement and adaptive frequency hopping, combined with multiband transmission, exhibit relatively large gains compared to schemes employing multiband transmission only and considerable gain when compared to single carrier FHSS transmission schemes
