Abstract :
A new wideband 2.4-GHz frequency synthesizer with auto-calibration technique, which is adaptive to process variation, is presented. The monolithic, wideband voltage controlled oscillator (VCO), which has both analog and digital control, has a wide tuning range of 1.98 GHz. The proposed synthesizer with self-calibration block is connected to the on-chip jitter measurement circuit. The control voltage of VCO is adjusted by the synthesizer in response to the measured jitter by the jitter measurement block. The response of the VCO is adjusted inherently towards the desired center frequency by the self-calibration process to reduce the jitter. The synthesizer, designed in TSMC 0.18-mum technology, has an edge jitter standard deviation of 1.32-ps. The zero-G standard compatible synthesizer has variable speed capability of 2.4-2.494 GHz with a programmable frequency divider that operates with a division range of 456-510
