  • Abstract
    The Authors analyze the use of an orthogonal convolutional code to obtain an encoded pulse-position-modulation (PPM) format directly as the encoder output. It is shown that the performance of this coding scheme exceeds the results obtained with block codes over a wider range, achieving good performances on the range 2-3 nats/photon, and a much slower degradation of over 3 nats/photon. Using a concatenated Reed-Solomon code with a proper rate as an outer code, the performance of the overall system is further improved, achieving good performances in the range 3-4 nats/photon.<>
