Abstract
Smart antennas/beamforming system is proposed as a promising solution that can significantly increase the data rate and improve the quality of wireless transmission. It enables the main beam to be directed towards a specific user, while the nulls are adjusted towards the interferers. In this work, we begin by investigating the effect of signal bandwidth on a smart antenna system and also focus on beamforming ability of the antenna. It is seen that, as the signal bandwidth increases, the interference rejection and the ability to form main beam in the desired direction cannot be achieved successfully using the existing narrowband weighting scheme. So, a concept of Finite Impulse Response (FIR) based beamforming has been modeled for broadband antenna array. Exhaustive simulation studies of wideband beamforming and comparative analysis have proved the efficacy of the proposed work from the application point of view.
