Abstract :
Summary form only given. Some advanced ATM applications are reviewed in the context of the ATM Research Consortium (ARC), an experimental research network in Southern California. ARC consists of several research institutes and universities, such as UCLA, CalTech, UC Irvine, ISI (Information Sciences Institute), JPL, Harvey Mudd College (HMC), The Aerospace Corporation, and others. We highlight some of the challenges encountered in standing up novel technology, and managing a variety of experimental collaborations in multiple disciplines, such as telemedicine, distributed and parallel computing, operations and management, performance studies, virtual world architectural imaging applications, the next Internet, and other applications. Lessons learned from collaborating with several telco carriers are also presented, with the added challenges of interoperability among several switches from a variety of vendors. A discussion is also provided on our observations with respect to ATM standards and the market forces that are driving the development of ATM technology
