Abstract
A synchronous transfer mode (STM) system multiplexing blockable wideband (WB) and queueable narrowband (NB) traffic in a broadband integrated services digital network is considered. An analysis of the system is presented and system performance is quantified in terms of access delay for the NB traffic and blocking probability for the WB traffic. Numerical results are provided to illustrate the analytic method and demonstrate the sensitivity of system performance to system parameters. It is pointed out that, without an additional access control, this type of WB/NB multiplexer may lead to severe deterioration of WB access performance
