Abstract :
A three-dimensional, time-dependent model was developed for parallel-gap welding of Si and GaAs solar cells to calculate the temperature distribution in the welded volume. The results of the modeling show that cracks can be caused by insufficient dissipation of the heat generated by the welding current. The model also shows how the welding cracks can be eliminated by changing the welding parameters (reducing weld energy or increasing the size of the welded region between the probe contact areas). When the welding conditions suggested by the model were implemented, the welded contacts showed improved performance.<>
