Abstract
Breast cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in women worldwide and this is a disease can be most efficiently treated if detected at an early stage. To enable early detection a regular checkup need to be done and mammography here is considered as a key diagnosing tool. Country wide screening program is another way of early detection. These two early detection strategies need huge amount of storage to store mammograms. Lossless compression of mammograms will reduce storage capacity needed and at the same time will enable faster image transmission over WANs, especially with limited bandwidth networks. The proposed algorithm was tested using mammograms from the MIAS database and comparisons are made to the performance of previously published research efforts using same datasets from the Mammographic Image Analysis Society (MIAS) database to build on comparison done covering best in class image compression techniques.
