Abstract :
Recently the importance of Wide-Area Situational Awareness (WASA) has increased as it can form the basis for power system stabilisation systems or be part of a smart grid. The standardisation of communication interfaces with the ability to integrate many kinds of sub systems becomes increasingly important in enabling the build of a standard WASA system. In Japan, Wide Area Monitoring, Protection and Control (WAMPAC) systems for power system stabilisation, which are a form of WASA system, have been applied for many years and significant experience has been gained in the application of this technology. We have conducted a review of our WAMPAC systems and international standards, and identified the standards that are important to WASA systems. Finally, we introduce a proposed system configuration for a WASA system based upon the international standards identified and a WASA evaluation system which we have developed.
