Abstract
The XIS architecture is the specification of XIS systems from an application developer´s perspective, providing integrated communication, operations, and corporate information services. The media used in these integrated services can be voice, data, text, image, video, or any combination of these. To meet the requirements for such services, the XIS architecture integrates various disciplines, such as software engineering, data communication, telephony, distributed systems, operating system, user interface management, and database management. The architecture design principles, the approach to separating concerns, global mechanisms for referencing, security, and information transfer, and a unifying model of servers providing capabilities to applications are described. Applications based on the XIS architecture can be developed, enhanced, and ported to systems produced by various vendors in a much easier and more flexible way than the approach based on no architecture or an architecture consisting of components that do not possess conceptual integrity
