Abstract
Evaluating and monitoring the urban acoustic environmental has become a main issue in the decade. Noise mapping is the state of art in European noise strategic acting frame; it plays an important role in noise control and city planning. The aim of the paper is to build a GIS-based noise mapping system, useful as a decision support system for urban planning and noise management. This system integrate a conceptual GIS data model and the noise calculation model into an operational framework, based on which extended GIS functions are developed to implement a linkage between the GIS and the noise calculation model. Through the approach, data, text, satellite images, models are integrated. The noise mapping of Guangzhou city central area completed through combining practical measurement and prediction. This thesis resolved the difficulties encountered in data obtaining and editing when calculating large area noise map, greatly improving making efficiency and accuracy and providing low cost solution for the making of noise mapping.
