Abstract
Focusing in the near field region of array antennas has drawn much interest in medical and industrial applications. Fractal antennas and arrays are finding much interest in recent years, for the benefits they offer over conventional ones. The feasibility of applying the fractal principle into focused arrays was investigated. The properties of binary tree fractal arrays were investigated. Fractal shapes were applied to positions of elements and excitations amplitude. The requirement for focusing leads to fractal phase excitation when element positions are fractally distributed. Computer simulations results are given for focusing of ordinary and fractal arrays. The results show that fractal antennas can be similarly focused, while giving favorable properties
