Abstract :
A simple theoretical model, which well describes the collision problem in a Paul ion trap in the presence of laser cooling and RF-heating, is established and confirmed by experiment. As an application, the preferable conditions of the mass ratio and the density ratio in the sympathetic cooling for arbitrary pairs of ions are predicted.
