Abstract :
Computer-assisted instruction systems have been broadly applied to help students solving arithmetic word problems. However, these systems offer little help to students encountering arithmetic word problems that do not be stored in the predesigned database. To solve arithmetic word problems which are not stored in the database, comprehending word problems is necessary. A method based on semantic sentence templates for comprehending word problems is presented in this paper. Fifty six semantic sentence templates are collected and represented with Jape rules. An experiment is conducted by gate tools, and the result shows that this method is effective to comprehend word problems in Chinese.
