Abstract
The polarization (TE or TM) of the electromagnetic field controls the dielectric response of an anisotropic periodic structure composed of successive layers with either negative permeability or negative permittivity. In a certain range of frequencies and incidence angles the periodic structure can thus behave as a metamaterial (left-handed material) for one polarization and as a right-handed material for the other polarization.
