Abstract
This paper is about implementing a solution based on a hierarchical task network (HTN) planning system for operating and optimizing energy production at Alcan´s Ltd. hydropower network. This solution proved to be more suitable than a former one using a rule-based system. We demonstrate how exploiting the hierarchical task oriented nature of the Alcan planning process helps (1) to increase to a significant degree some relevant software qualities in the management of a hydroelectric network and (2) to improve the whole performance of the system
