  • Abstract
The pollution of Jiaozhou Bay was investigated by measuring the trace elements of surface sediments. Sediment samples were collected at 33 locations in Jiaozhou Bay in November 2003. The large-scale distribution pattern of metals in surface sediments showed elevated levels of Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, Hg compared with values obtained in 1989. Concentrations of soil-related elements such as Al, Fe, Mn did not show a significant trend among sample groups. Crustal enrichment factors (EF) were calculated. The results showed that anthropogenic elements such as Zn, Pb, Cd, Cu, As, Hg, Cr were found to be highly enriched at river outfalls. The distribution of the metal species studied in surface sediments of Jiaozhou Bay appeared to be controlled by point sources from the sewage system.
