Abstract
The design of components and manufacturing systems is considered from manufacturing system reliability and maintainability, productivity, material handling, agility, and reconfigurability perspectives. The ultimate goal of the approaches discussed in this paper is to reduce the manufacturing cost without compromising the functionality of component. The design for manufacturing operations is accomplished through design rules which are based on empirical and theoretical knowledge
