Abstract
The performance degradation of filter bank based multicarrier (MC) transmission due to timing errors is investigated. A MC receiver structure is considered where the dispersive channel is equalized by means of a fractionally spaced equalizer. In principle, the equalizer can correct the timing at the receiver. However, when the coefficients of the equalizer are computed for a sampling instant different from the correct timing, the decision variables suffer from increased inter-carrier interference. In addition, the useful signal component can be severely attenuated. Both the effect of timing offset and jitter are evaluated. When knowledge of the correct sampling instant is available at the receiver, an interpolator can be used to compensate the timing error. The efficiency of various types of interpolators is investigated
