Abstract
Navigation using the Global Positioning System (GPS) is rapidly growing in importance now that the satellite constellation is mature and equipment prices are approaching the consumer price range. With the improving availability of map databases, GPS is poised ready for the start of the next major expansion in to everyday use, for example, in cars and cellphones. This paper is an investigation on the benefits of using a digital signal processor (DSP) in a GPS receiver with special emphasis on fast acquisition techniques and the results obtained, which show a significant improvement over current consumer receivers
