Abstract
To reduce the number of transmissions and receptions at clusterhead, layered cluster formation in wireless sensor network (LCFWSN), a novel layered cluster formation scheme, is proposed in this paper for achieving reduction in the energy consumption at the clusterhead and also at each node so as to increase life of cluster and network both. In proposed scheme instead of non cluster member joining the cluster the clusterhead starts the cluster formation process by advertising the layer formation over the cluster area and then the nodes in the first layer advertise with reduced power so as to reach very small number of nodes in its vicinity to form next layer. The node selected as leader in each layer in turn mimic the process to form the higher layers. Theoretical analysis of LCFWSN shows that this scheme reduces the energy consumption of clusterhead and thus extends its life. LCFWSN is expected to give a fair justice to the nodes located near the cluster boundary.
