Abstract :
This paper describes the design, based on a cognitive task analysis and a socio-technical analysis, of a support system for power grid operators. The paper also presents a technique, based on array logic, which has been found very suitable for configuration and simulation of complex systems. The design approach addresses the human operator´s needs and prerequisites, and that the task should be carried out efficiently. The two most important design goals have been: the task should remain an opportunity for the operators´ on-the-job training; and support improved quality assurance in the switching instructions by preventing human errors. A prototype system, by which an operator interactively generate a switching order, has been implemented. The system admits the input of any valid topology. The technique used in this application is based on array logic and planar graph theory. The array logic is used to describe the logical state of switched objects (devices), cluster of objects and rules. This technique is a new tool for configuration of complex and constraint systems in terms of consistent representation of topology, compactness of rules and speed of simulation
