Abstract
This paper describes an expert system designed to find the feeder in a transmission network that contains a fault, and to analyse the response of the relays and circuit breakers to that fault. The system also identifies which, if any, relays and circuit breakers have maloperated, i.e. those that have failed to trip when required or tripped when not required. The paper describes the knowledge based models used by this expert system. and also explains how the system creates its own database and updates it whenever a switching operation occurs on the power network
