Abstract
Bottom Hole Assemblies (BHA) that operates under downhole drilling conditions, such as directional drilling system containing measurement-while-drilling (MWD)/logging-while-drilling(LWD) module, can experience a significant amount of extremely high vibration stresses and extreme downhole temperature over their lifetimes. With the stress accumulated, it might induce downhole IADC (International Association of Drilling Contractors) trip for failure. Failures of drilling systems require tripping the equipment out of the hole to replace it, resulting in 1/2-2 days of Non-Productive Time (NPT) on drilling rigs costing $100K-$1M/day. Moreover, with Bottom Hole Temperature and Pressure increasing, the reliability requirement on the drilling system is highly in demand. Through data acquisition technologies, the drilling profile is captured by the sensor and recorded in the memories of the MWD/LWD module. Based on the drilling profiles, the drilling hours and mission cycle are retrieved and calculated for evaluating the success opportunity of the drilling activies carried out by the directional drilling system. The effectiveness of implementing the Dynamic Factor Model can provide operational benefits through assessing the operation & product reliability performance on the whole directional drilling system composed of three subcomponents, namely, the rotary steerable system, the MWD/LWD Module and the Power/Communication Module. This method equips the operation & engineering group of Oil Field Services provider with the capability to better understand the systematic reliability of the whole drill string.
