Abstract :
The paper discusses and explores the benefits of the utilisation of remote telemetry systems as a management tool to increase business efficiency and substantially reduce operational costs. Historically remote monitoring and control systems have been used to report equipment alarms and this concept is understood. The paper reviews the need for dependable communications for remote telemetry systems and the use of trend analysis to compare the level of faults and events from complete and regional telecommunications networks. It reviews the methods available to compare like for like equipment from different manufacturers and how the information gathered can be implemented to increase performance and quality of service. The paper explores the techniques available to reduce costs associated with maintenance and spare part inventories and how sophisticated remote telemetry systems can provide an effective mechanism for the outsourcing of system support. It considers the various reporting and management methods available to enable effective use of manpower and the network support equipment and infrastructure. It evaluates how trends in system use can be adapted to provide a planning model for the network and the support structures so as to ensure changes in network size and demand are planned and implemented effectively. It reviews the methods of reporting data and investigates the historical and future processes employed to obtain the information from remote sites. The paper provides examples of the appropriate methods for distribution of the information to management, employees and contractors so as to improve the profitability of the business year on year.
