  • Abstract
    This paper examines the use of expert systems [ES] amongst UK banks and building societies. Its findings are based upon a survey of 20 large banks and building societies in which data on ES applications was collected by questionnaire and interview. Respondents to the study were asked to describe their organisations operational systems, their experiences in using these systems and the resulting financial impacts. In addition to an analysis of the survey findings the paper provides brief case studies of several actual applications. Despite apparently strong arguments for the use of ES in this area the study found that ES development remained, in most cases, a marginal activity and discovered little evidence of organisational change resulting from ES implementation
