Abstract :
To meet the increasing demands of wireless users, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and carrier aggregation have been included in the Long Term Evolution Advanced (LTE-A) standard. However, the success of these schemes rely on the presence of multiple decoupled antennas on the handset. This paper presents a compact five-port chassis-based antenna designed using characteristic modes (CMs), which can potentially allow greater modularity and less stringent requirements on the RF front-end of future handsets. It simultaneously achieves MIMO operation in LTE bands 2 and 5, and inter-band carrier aggregation with LTE band 7. Good isolation, with a minimum of 17.2 dB is observed in simulations between all five ports of the antenna.
