Abstract
Deregulation of the electricity industry in the UK and beyond, together with the popularity and proven track record of diesel powered electricity generating plant, has greatly improved the prospects for embedded generation. On-going advances in technology with relation to the prime mover, alternator, control and protection systems, have all contributed to a current trend toward more compact and cost-effective packages. An improving level of co-operation between gen-set manufacturers, utilities and academia, as evidenced by the collaborative project, will continue to break down much of the “black art” so often referred to when discussing the requirements for the connection and operation of embedded generating plant
