Abstract :
Increased stiffness of arteries has recently gained acceptance as an independent risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. Pulse wave velocity (PWV) is widely used for estimating the stiffness of an artery. However, PWV is an average indicator of artery stiffness between two measuring points, and therefore does not identify local stiffness. We have found that some ring resonant frequencies can be used for measuring local arterial elasticity. We hypothesize that some ring resonant modes exhibit much less vibration in the radial direction of arteries and therefore, they are independent of the interior blood and exterior surrounding tissues. In this paper, a ring resonant frequency of a latex tube is measured. It is found that the ring resonant frequency is similar for the tube with and without gelatin.
