Abstract :
With the advances of VLSI and parallel computing, a high speed, high density and reconfigurable interconnection network is required in order to increase the capability of providing fast parallel access to data. The parallelism and high bandwidth of optics means that optical interconnections are being developed in computer networks. However, there exist many difficulties in optical networks providing reconfigurational capability. In this article, we present the design concepts for a hybrid interconnection network, in which a programmable electronic device is used to vary the network topology, and light to transmit the information. The network performance and its application in a multistage processor array system are described
