Abstract :
The authors present in the paper the fabrication and characterization of spin-coatable, photoimageable polymer waveguides based on poly(phenylene). The precursors were converted into poly(phenylene) by curing at 300°C for 6 hours or by UV exposure in the presence of a photoacid generator. Several bake temperature vs time cycles were investigated for determining optimum bake times and temperatures. Poly(phenylene) has several unique properties: good near-IR transmission, good thermal and environmental stability and excellent photopatterning capabilities among others that are desirable for optical waveguides. The authors present the near-IR spectrum of poly(phenylene) which shows that the poly(phenylene) has good optical properties (~100% transmission) in the near-IR region. The polymer is highly resistant to thermal decomposition and oxidation and is stable against weight loss up to 450°C in nitrogen
