Summary form only given. During the past ten years, advances in various technologies have literally revolutionized the information networking industry. A key element of this revolution has been the rapid advances in optoelectronics technology. For example, the distance-bit rate product of lightwave transmission systems has doubled every year. The result of these advances has been an explosive growth in expectations for services based on these technologies, This talk will discuss some recent trends in information networking and the implications of these trends
