Abstract
Summary form only given. We will present the measured VUV transmission and F2 laser induced fluorescence of a number of samples of Nd:LaF3, Nd:YLF, Tb:YLF, and Ho:YLF. Of these, the LaF3 in particular appears to exhibit significant absorption at the Nd:LaF3 laser wavelength, and we shall discuss the possible causes of this loss as well as attempts to eliminate it. We will also present the preliminary results of experiments to measure the optical gain in a number of rare-earth doped trifluorides
