Author_Institution :
Dept. of Electr. & Comput. Eng., Ohio State Univ., Columbus, OH
Abstract :
Summary form only given. In this talk we shall discuss the implications of the term "grand challenge" both from the general and the specific perspective. First we shall consider what the major technical and technological problems have been for intelligent/autonomous vehicle developers through the years. What were the "grand challenges" for those who paved the way for intelligent vehicle highway systems? Second, we shall consider the US DARPA Grand Challenges of 2004 and 2005 and the newly announced 2007 urban challenge. What IV problems were solved and will be solved by 2007 in those DARPA programs? We shall finally briefly consider what needs to be further addressed in the future
