Abstract :
We describe an investigation of ATM over wireless links. We first analyze the ATM header error correction (HEC) mechanism and calculate ATM quality of service (QoS) parameters such as the cell loss ratio (CLR), and the cell error rate (CER) for a wireless link. We suggest possible error control method to improve the performance degradation caused by burst errors. The error control methods considered include the forward error correction (FEC) for delay-sensitive traffic and automatic repeat request (ARQ) for nondelay-sensitive traffic to make the physical layer as SONET-like as possible. Especially, this paper provides a performance comparison between FEC and ARQ through the use of packet error rate and throughput
