Abstract :
In this work we review some numerical strategies developed to simulate optical devices based on waveguide structures. Starting from the problem of knowing the allowed modes in optical waveguides, both planar and channel, we describe the different approaches followed to solve this basic problem. Then, we consider the important aspect of beam propagation in optical waveguides, and present the different algorithms and numerical implementations that can be used to face this problem, making emphasis on the degree of approximation demanded from the technical implementation and performances of the devices. Some aspects related to unsolved questions, or to increase the computer efficiency of some problems are also pointed out
