Abstract :
Swedish CAA (LFV) has been involved in the development, validation and local implementation of ADS-B (automatic dependent surveillance - broadcast) and VDL (VHF digital link) Mode 4 since the beginning of the 1990´s. Much of this work has been performed within NUP, a European Commission funded project involving industry, airlines, aviation administrations, service providers and research institutes. ADS-B is an enabler of a number of new applications for the future ATM system. One of the applications that Sweden has been validating is in-trail separation, ITS, in which the responsibility for separation can at special circumstances be delegated to the pilot. The application is one of the examples of task re-distribution and true cooperation between the airborne side and air traffic control.
