Abstract :
Sensors used to measure the magnitude of a current are frequently oriented into the flow with a direction vane. In the case of turbulent flow (or flow with wave motion superimposed), vane fluctuations may couple directly with the magnitude sensor. The degree of coupling is a function of the geometry of the current meter, the frequency-wave number characteristics of the flow oscillations and the bandwidth of the vane response. Many traditional oceanographic and hydrologic current meters are prone to coupling errors. In this paper, the results of field tests on the vane coupling in a Price 1210AA current meter are compared for two rivers with differing turbulence characteristics. The design of a new mount which totally eliminates vane coupling in the Price meter is also presented
