Abstract
This paper deals with the modeling and dimensioning problems of the interaction channel for DVB systems; these include a description of the broadband environment and the development of suitable traffic reference models and bandwidth resource dimensioning rules. The implications of the service attributes and traffic characteristics for the network topology as well as its evolutionary upgrade path are also discussed. Despite uncertainty with regard to future traffic and service characteristics, which cannot be predicted accurately, it has proved possible to make a reasonable estimate of demand for services to be used in a pilot installation of the DVB (digital video broadcasting) system
