Abstract :
Four series of high birefringence bistolane liquid crystals were synthesized and characterized. Biphenyl and naphthyl moieties were introduced to enhance the birefringence. These bistolane compounds exhibit reasonably low melting points and high birefringence of 0.5-0.8.
