Abstract :
Considering realistic teletraffic analysis in advanced packet-switched networks, the estimation of basic characteristics of the arrival processes by empirical data is an important subject of current research. Using independent observations of the interarrival times between events and the mean number of events in intervals of fixed length, we state new procedures to estimate the intensity of a nonhomogeneous Poisson process and the renewal function of a renewal process. In our approach we formulate the estimation task as statistical ill-posed problem and apply the regularization technique for the solution of the derived Volterra´s integral equations and the stabilization of the estimates.
