  • Abstract
We have developed a novel therapy for the restoration of functional ambulation following incomplete spinal cord injury (ISCI) that incorporates partial weight-bearing therapy (PWBT) and epidural spinal cord stimulation (ESCS). In this study, we present results with this combination therapy applied in an ASIA C incomplete paraplegic subject. Analysis of (i) partial-support treadmill gait and (ii) walker-assisted over-ground ambulation revealed a dramatic improvement in ambulatory function with PWBT. In comparing gait performance with and without ESCS, we observed a significant ESCS-induced increase in electromyograpic activity, particularly on the weaker left limb. Functionally, ESCS improved leg extension, weight acceptance, and weight bearing unilaterally.
