Architecture and Performance of XML-Based Componentization of the Symbian Smartphone Platform

Service-oriented architecture (SOA) is common in enterprise back-ends and is finding its way to mainstream desktop systems. SOA is traditionally built on top of an existing component infrastructure. This paper investigates how a similar architecture can be realized in mobile devices based on the Symbian operating system; in an environment that does not have a fully-fledged component infrastructure. The proposed middleware merges the service-oriented and component layers into a single architectural layer.
