Abstract
The paper reviews the current state of the art in the field of data reduction for high and medium quality audio applications, with particular emphasis on the methods standardised by the ISO-MPEG as ISO 11172-3. It also summarises the recent ISO-MPEG work which is aimed at defining further enhancements to the original standard, known as MPEG 2. It is acknowledged that the ISO-MPEG approach is not the only one in existence, there being a number of alternative commercial coding systems for high quality audio. These are mentioned briefly
