Abstract
This paper presents and applies a more accurate model for the analysis of the electromagnetic transients within a sample radial power network following the switching of shunt capacitors. The approach is based on the long line equivalent circuit and the generalized circuit constants. It will take into account the distributed nature of the line parameters as well as the line capacitance. The analysis will result in a closed-form analytical expression for the voltage transient appearing at the load terminals. This expression will include, among other parameters, the location and size of the capacitor. It will also lead to a more accurate identification of the frequency of the switching transient, as felt at the load terminals.
