Abstract
Partial discharge (PD) tests on operating motors and generators are now widely used around the world to assess the condition of the stator winding insulation. Data is presented which shows that the calibration into picoCoulumbs can yield misleading interpretations. The reasons for this are discussed. The conclusion is that with present technology, PD testing of stator windings can only be comparative
