Abstract
Closed form mathematical expressions of network parameters such as the mean packet delay are useful for evaluating the communication network performance in the design process. This paper provides a derivation of a closed form expression of the mean packet delay for the limited service dynamic bandwidth allocation algorithm (DBAA) in an Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON). Using the queuing analysis framework of a multi-user cyclic polling system with reservation, we derive the mean packet delay expression by modifying the expression for the reservation time component of the total packet delay. The derivation relies on approximating the maximum transmission time window (TW) per cycle by the maximum number of transmitted packets per cycle. Results from simulation experiments indicate that our analysis can accurately predict the mean packet delay for the limited service in EPONs.
