Abstract :
Polyurethanes were prepared from 2,4-toluene diisocyanate and poly-(propylene oxide glycol) and bis-amine propyl polydimethylsiloxane. The physical properties of these polymers were determined using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The thermal properties were investigated through thermogravimetric analysis. The water resistance was determined by calculating water absorption. The blood compatibility of each polymer was determined by calculating its relative index of platelet adhesion (RIPA). Domain separation of the resulting PU occurred during polymerization because of the immiscibility of the hydrophilic and hydrophobic soft segment. The PUS50 sample, with its RIPA of 0.39, appears to be suitable for biomedical applications as a blood-compatible material.
