Abstract :
The paper seeks to examine the importance of safety and disaster preparedness for strategic global infrastructure communication satellite systems using a design approach based on space qualified components with: system level fault protection, integrated redundant on-board data handling systems, identified and potential satellite single point of failures, in-orbit satellite spares for risk mitigation, ground station design considerations including provisioning of cold and hot redundancy units and subsystem equipment to preclude ground station failures.
