Abstract :
In this paper a control strategy based on a special protection circuit is presented by which the matrix converter is protected using a free wheeling path available at any time. It will be shown that a switching off of one or more semiconductors of the inverter matrix can not interrupt the inductive load current. This is done without any complicated commutation strategy and without any of the well known protection circuits. This reduces the measurement and control complexity significantly, whereby the risk of failure is decreased.
